Can I trigger the loops on a drum machine using a pad instead of a footswitch?

I%26#039;m a drummer/percusionist and want to trigger the loops while playing. Most drum machines have footswitch option via a 1/4%26quot; jack. Can I substitute the footswitch with a single pad trigger. Is that possible?
